Happy holidays! (No ep this week)
Hello from sin city!
This week, we’re each spending some down time in meaningful places: Jay with his newborn, Mai with family in Texas, and Tammy… in beautiful Las Vegas!
Tammy went to a lo-fi magic show (half catered toward children, half perverted) and ate at a ridiculously extravagant buffet on the strip, which brought back memories of post-church visits to Old Country Buffet. She reports that Las Vegas is dominated by Asian families trying to get cheap holiday deals. Din Tai Fung remains very reliably Din Tai Fung.
Mai has been spending quality time with her family and their dog, Olive, and managed to bake a flourless chocolate cake that got rave reviews (not a given with her food-oriented family).
As for Jay, he says: “Hello everyone, I am typing this from newborn land! Everyone is healthy and doing well and I will be back to episodes once I start remembering what day it is. Should be soon!”
We’ll be back with a new episode soon! In the meantime, check out some of our recs and old TTSG favs:
Disability Visibility, a Substack by the disability activist and critic Alice Wong.
Foreign Exchanges, a very good Substack on world affairs, by a pal from the American Prestige pod (which has its own Substack).
ChinaTalk, a great Substack on all things China.
Our ep with Kendra Pierre-Louis, on environmental activism.
Tammy and Andy’s talk with Naomi Murakawa, on abolition.
Jay’s interview with Ocean Vuong, on lots of stuff non-literary.
